Why do Americans keep building wood houses?
Main Post:
It's something I've been wondering for a while, and I thought I could get a bit of insight on the subject.
It puzzles me why americans build houses with wood as its main structural material. Ok, I get it: it's cheap and fast to build a wooden house, but I'm sick of watching news about tornadoes destroying whole neighbourhoods... and then rebuilding those same houses with the absolutely not tornado-proof building material that is wood.
Also, danger of fire, moisture, structural fail is more prone to happen within a wood house.
Wouldn't concrete or bricks be a more suitable material for housing?
Any tips?
Top Comment: Timber is a renewable resource. It is thermally efficient and if done right, can be very aesthetically pleasing. Head to colder climates and you'll see why everyone uses timber there.

That’s freaking awesome. Love how the mountains sit within the bear silhouette.
Why are the table tops so expensive?
Main Post:
Why are they so expensive? I see on Home Depot I can buy a wood butcher block for under $300. What differentiates theirs and DeskHaus’?
And no, I’m not dogging on DeskHaus, I’m just genuinely curious as I’m sure there’s a reason and thinking about picking up one myself as I’ve never had a “nice” table top before. I don’t really know what a “good” table top is and why someone would want one.
Top Comment: The solid wood tops are full length pieces. Even the maple butcher block. A cheaper butcher block uses smaller pieces glued together to make the full run. Full length pieces are more durable and can be more aesthetically pleasing, especially with more exotic hardwoods like walnut, which uses fewer wider pieces than the maple. Also the species of wood matters. Desk Haus uses walnut, oak, and maple. The cheaper butcher blocks use birch, beech, and hevea. These woods are lighter in color and have smaller plain grains compared to walnut which has pretty swirls. You can get walnut butcher blocks in smaller pieces like the birch for less (but more than the lighter hardwoods). But you lose more on the look vs using full length board. Lastly finishing is also a factor. Cheaper butcher blocks at HomeDepot are usually unfinished. Which IMO is not a big deal as you can do it yourself with something like Rubio Monocoat, which is super easy to repair vs a varnish (that’s how Desk Haus does their finish unless you request otherwise in a bespoke). There is nothing wrong with getting a big box butcher block and finishing it yourself. But the quality is definitely different. If you have it shipped, HomeDepot is known to ship cracked butcher blocks. Which if it’s bad you have to return. If minor you have to fill before sanding and finishing. Floor and Decor has a better selection in my area. I was able to pick up same day. Mine had no defects. And I can easily exchange vs HomeDepot. And they were cheaper. $150-$170 vs $250. I use Desk Haus walnut in my office and a Floor and Decor beech for my work bench in my garage (just got the beech this week).
